The San Jose Police Airport Division is a specialized unit of the SJPD and is staffed by officers that have an average of 20-plus years experience. In addition to providing police services the SJPD Airport Division works closely with other local, state and federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Transportation Security Administration. It is through these partnerships that the SJPD is able to ensure the safety of passengers, enforce the Airport Security Plan and to ensure compliance with TSA and FAA regulations. This division was formed in 1990 after the San Jose Airport Security Police was absorbed by the SJPD.

The SJPD Airport Division is patrolled in a variety of means including utilizing officers on foot, patrol cars, bicycles and Segways. Officers assigned to patrol airport terminals can frequently be seen traveling on Segways. This type of transportation allows for increased visibility and speed, as they allow officers to travel quickly and quietly through the crowds. Bicycle patrols are also utilized throughout terminal buildings but are more commonly utilized to patrol heavily-congested roadways, sidewalks and parking lots.
In addition to human officers the SJPD Airport Division also has a specially trained canine team. These animals and their handlers are used to assist with the regular screening of passengers, baggage and airport facilities for explosive devices. These teams are evaluated on an annual basis in order to ensure continued, high-level proficiency. The department warns travelers not to approach a working canine. Those with questions about the dogs or about airport procedures should direct their inquires to the handler.
