Members of the Santa Clara Sheriff’s Department are reminding residents that not only does the holiday season bring out good will and cheer, it is also a time where would-be thieves are increasingly on the prowl.
The Department is urging additional safety precautions be taken while out shopping. Valuables should be stowed away out of sight and if possible, in the trunk of the car. The same holds for cell phone and/or laptop chargers, as chargers are usually a good indicator to thieves that these types of items are being stored in the car. Shoppers should be diligent about locking doors and windows, should refrain from carrying large amounts of cash and are encouraged to park in well-lit areas if they are visiting local retailers at night.
Similar safety precautions are also encouraged for homes. Thieves are reported to be especially attracted to large, visible gift displays that are visible through windows. If you have packages that are being delivered, you should consider requesting a signature be required. Residents who believe they see suspicious persons or suspicious activity are encouraged to call police right away. Non-emergency calls should be directed to the local police department. Emergency calls can be placed to 9-1-1.
