A spokesperson for the San Jose Police Department has confirmed the SJPD has asked the city for funds to buy a new helicopter.
The current helicopter is old, he said, and it is approaching a state where it will not be safe to fly.
NBC Bay Area reports the department’s Airbus EC-120B was purchased approximately 17 years ago and that “it’s the oldest law enforcement helicopter of its kind” in the United States. The typical lifespan of a helicopter is between 6 and 8 years.
Police say it’s been a good investment in public safety, and the idea of being without one could harm crime fighting efforts.
Another overhaul would cost about $500,000, a spokesperson said; the cost to purchase a new helicopter is estimated to be $3 million.
City officials said they will take the issue up next month.
