A suspect who is believed of stealing packages off the doorsteps of Palo Alto homes has been booked into the Santa Clara County jail. The man in question, Phillip Stafford, has been charged with possession of stolen property. He also faces other felony and misdemeanor charges.
A spokesperson for the San Jose Police Department said the suspect is also believed to have ties to similar thefts which took place in San Jose. Officers said that when they searched his place they found packages that may have been taken from other local doorsteps.
It is unclear whether he will face additional charges at the time of his arraignment. The San Jose PD reportedly said the case had been ongoing for several weeks. It was not until Jan. 1 when a resident placed an anonymous tip that they had seen a white male pilfering mail items from doorsteps. In addition to the believed stolen items officers found a fake handgun, a baton, and illegal drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine. Plastic baggies and a scale were also confiscated from the suspects vehicle. It is believed he may have also been involved in the sale and transportation of narcotics.
Stafford’s bail amount was not immediately available although it is believed to have been set in excess of $60,000. The cost to arrange bail bonds in Santa Clara will be 10% of a defendant’s total bail.
