Authorities have confirmed that a man who crashed his car into a local Walmart has been booked into the San Jose Jail. Police say that after the crash took place the suspect exited his vehicle and began beating patrons with an unknown blunt object. Store officials say employees and shoppers were able to subdue the man a short time later. He was subsequently arrested by the San Jose Police.
It is unclear why the defendant chose to commit the crime. SJPD officials have not indicated whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time the incident took place. Other sources have indicated he may have been high on methamphetamine. Witnesses said they saw the man driving erratically in the parking lot prior to pointing the vehicle toward the store.
One shopper reportedly said she was positive the driver intended to hurt people. Those who were injured have since been treated and released. Their injuries were not life threatening.
The unnamed defendant is currently being held at the San Jose Jail on an undisclosed bail amount. He faces multiple charges including felony hit and run and assault with a deadly weapon. It is believed his bail has been set in excess of $200,000 based on the violent and forceful nature of the crime. If he or a member of his family wishes to move forward with arranging San Jose bail bonds their total cost will be 10%.
He is due in court to be arraigned later this week.
