A spokesperson for the Los Gatos Police Department say they have arrested a man after a routine traffic stop uncovered he was in possession of drugs and a loaded gun. Defendant Michael Gonsalves has since been booked into the Santa Clara County Jail. Gonsalves faces charges relating to possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a loaded firearm, being under the influence of a controlled substance while in the possession of a weapon and driving on a suspended license.
Bail information for the defendant was not immediately available although it is suspected bail had been set in excess of $25,000. Jail records indicate that Gonsalves is no longer in custody. It is unclear whether he was released through the help of a local bondsman. If a San Carlos bondsman had been hired the fee to purchase a bond would have been 10% of the defendant’s total bail amount. Inmates who are bonded out typically have their arraignments delayed by about 30 days. This allows the defendant additional time to consult with an attorney to prepare their case.
The arresting officer said the defendant was reportedly found to have a .22 caliber pistol on his person at the time of his arrest. That weapon has since been confiscated. They did not indicate what type or how many narcotics were found. Police say they are unsure why Gonsalves was in Los Gatos.
