Sources within the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department have confirmed that a jail inmate who has been on the run since March 6 has been recaptured.
40 year-old Johnell Carter was picked up by the US Marshal Service in Mississippi.
His brother, Joseph Carter, was arrested in late March in Lodi. He is being charged as an accessory after the fact for helping the escapee evade law enforcement. Sources said that Joseph Carter allegedly drove the on-the-run inmate to the bus station after he escaped from a San Jose hospital.
Law enforcement officials have not said how the US Marshal Service managed to track Johnell Carter, but they did say he tried to escape on foot when he realized what was happening.
The inmate had been in custody for about a yer and was facing life in prison.
At the time of the escape the defendant attacked and injured a sheriff’s deputy before fleeing toward Moorpark Avenue.
